Uthman ibn Affan reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 439, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 533
Most religions have a place of worship. For Islam, it is the mosque. Not only a place for praying, it’s the center of the community and where many wonderful pieces of Islamic art have been created.
Mosques are the heart of the Islamic life. They serve for prayers, for events during Islam’s holiest month Ramadan, as centers for education and information, places for social welfare, and also for dispute settlement. The iman is the religious leader of the mosque and the person who leads the prayers.
Mosques are as old as Islam. According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad helped in the construction of the first mosque in the city of Medina, as part of his will to define a place of worship for Muslims. The area around the Kaaba Stone in Mecca is often considered the oldest Muslim place of worship, venerated since the 7th century. Both cities are in today’s Saudi Arabia and are considered the holiest cities in Islam.
In Islam, worship is the very purpose of our existence. Allah (SWT) declares in the Quran, the holy book of Islam, “I did not create … mankind except to worship Me” (51:56). Muslims worship Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, out of love and submission. We all believe that Allah is the only one who is completely unique and only He deserves to be worshipped.
The Holy Prophet on the importance of mosques
| O ye people, praise Allah. Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah, The Exalted, shall build a house for such a one in paradise. |
To Allah, the most adored places are the mosques and the most undesirable places are market places.
Mosques are the houses of Allah and those believers who enter therein are the guests of Allah.
Those who visit the mosques in darkness convey to them the good news that Allah shall bestow upon them from Himself perfect light on the day of judgment.
For him who makes his ablutions at home and then walks to one of the houses of Allah to discharge his obligations imposed on him by Allah, one single step of his towards the mosque wipes out a sin and next step raises his status.
Whenever anyone of you enters a mosque let him pray that “O Allah open up for me the doors of Thy Mercy”; and whenever anyone from among you leaves a mosque, let him pray ” O Allah, I seek from Thee Thy blessings”.
Of all the buildings the most beautiful and attractive in Allah’s sight is a Mosque.
May Allah save us and guide us away from devils that are eager to destroy Islam in us. Let’s be united to show solidarity by building the maximum numbers of mosques all around the world.
